How to make the perfect soft boiled egg every time

Seriously-what could be a better breakfast for a weekday or weekend, even a brunch or lunch? The perfect soft boiled egg.

I love them on the weekends after a sleep in as an early lunch, a soft boiled egg and soldiers. Of course accompanied by a yummy cup of tea.  Requested by children and teens and easily prepared by all.

Straight to it, this is how it is done.

Up to 4 eggs

Fill a saucepan with enough water that would cover the eggs.  Do not put the eggs in yet. Bring the water to steady boil over high heat.

Place the eggs carefully one at a time into the water.  I use a slotted spoon but If you do not have a slotted spoon any large spoon would work. Try not to crack the eggs.  Lower the heat to a simmer once all of the eggs are in.

If an egg cracks they are still edible but will just not as pretty or as easy to crack cleanly.

Have a timer set and as soon as the eggs are in the water press start.

For a runny yolk (just my style) do 5 minutes.

For a firmer yolk up to 7 minutes.

When they are done to the way you like them turn off the heat or move the saucepan off of the heat (safety first). Take the eggs out one at a time and with your spoon cool them off under the tap of cold water for about 20 seconds. Then put then in an egg cup.

During your 5 minutes of egg cooking time you have time to prepare your plate and make your soldiers. I always choose a fun egg cup and then make my soldiers  using a plain piece of bread, butter it, cut in long strips and cut those in half.

Some people prefer soldiers that are toasted.

Now its time to prep your egg and take the top off. There are various ways to do that.  Some people take a knife chop around the top to take the top ¼ off.  I have known others that smack the top and take the top ¼ off with a spoon. I now have a device called an egg cracker. It’s perfect as I eat a lot of soft boiled eggs.  You place it on the egg, lift up the ball, drop it (I usually do that twice) and there it is a beautifully cracked soft boiled egg. You take a knife and cut though the divided line.

Whatever your prefered method get prepared to sit down with a perfect soft boiled egg.

As for soldiers. I have always put my bread in the egg 1 piece at a time. Then I eat the rest off the egg up with a spoon. I have eaten them like this since I was a child and taught my children the same way.  If you would prefer your bread a different way do what works for you.

I hope you enjoy your egg no matter how you prefer to eat them.
