How to Grow an Avocado and Make Dad’s Easy Guacamole

I love avocado, sliced with any meal, as a snack or as guacamole. I watched a friend grow one once from the seed in the avocado. She wrapped the seed in a wet paper towel.  Kept it wrapped and wet and finally planted a rooted avocado. Easy.

Avocado’s and I have a love/hate relationship. They are not the easiest to get the seed out of but so worth it. I have this super handy device that is plastic that not only has a serrated edge to cut around the avocado skin but an actual avocado pitter. OXO 3-in-1 avocado slicer.

The reason my husband gave me this handy device was that I used to cut avocados with a knife and stab the pit to get it out.  It worked great, I did it that way for years. An important tip: when doing this do not to get distracted, it is VERY painful when you stab your own hand. Yes, I learnt that lesson the hard way. Now my avocado slicer is one of my favorite kitchen gadgets and highly recommended.

I have visions of eventually having an avocado tree. Every time I have an avocado I remove the seed and do the same steps as my friend. I put it in the wet paper towel and water it.  After a few days I usually forget to add water so after about a week or 2 I toss it out. This year as a Christmas gift from my girls I received Grow Your Own Avocado Tree by Avoseedo.

Grow Your Own Avocado Tree

I was still skeptical. The instructions seemed pretty clear I thought, looking at the pictures.  The writing was a bit too small so I didn’t pay attention to that. You put a seed from an avocado in a little boat, add a flag and wait.

The attempt began. I placed the container by my kitchen sink (hopeful water reminder). Put the seed in the little boat.  Getting its weight evenly distributed so that the boat did not tip over. There was nothing but a seed floating around for ages. I’d add water to the pot and wait, more water and wait. Not really expecting much. Then eventually one day I noticed it had started to crack, so I continued add water, then add more water. It cracked some more and finally we saw sprout and root! What? Did we have success?

The Avoseedo Grow Your Own Avocado is an all in one growing set where they have you add soil to the pot to grow. We finally planted ours in a container in the garden and I have a vision of making guacamole from my own avocado tree. My husband thinks we should just see what happens now.

I’m ready to go and grab another avocado and start again.  Maybe I’ll read the actual directions this time. Where’s the fun in that? Time to get my husband to make his quick and easy guacamole. Always a huge hit and we all love it.

Dad’s Quick and Easy Guacamole

Guacamole ingredients. Chopped onion in a red bowl and chopped tomatoes in a yellow bowl. An avocado and half a lemon. Garlic salt in a clear bowl. All on a wooden chopping board.

Ingredients

  • 2 Large Avocados
  • 1 small white onion (chopped)
  • 1 Medium tomato (chopped)
  • 1 small lemon (juice)
  • 1 TSP garlic salt
mashed avocado and fork in a green bowl.

Mash avocados with a fork mixing in squeezed lemon juice to soften.

Add garlic salt and mix

Add chopped onion and chopped tomato and mix

We add some additional onion and tomatoes at the end for presentation.

For a smaller batch of guacamole ½ all of the items.

For a larger batch of guacamole double everything but do the garlic salt to taste preference.

How to tell if it is a good avocado.

If it is super hard it is not ripe.  If you squeeze the avocado a little and it’s super squishy then it’s too ripe.  It only needs to be a little soft.

You need to eat the guacamole within a few hours of making it as it will start to brown. After preparing it if you are not ready to eat it yet, cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate.  Some people recommend leaving the seed in with it until you get ready to eat it.

How to Slice the Avocado

Slice round the avocado length wise. Twist and separate.  One of the sides will have the seed. If you have the OXO 3-in-1 avocado slicer then there is a piece in the center that you use to remove the pit when you put it into the pit and turn it. If not carefully use a knife or spoon to remove it. After that you scoop the avocado out with a spoon.

Ready, Set, Eat!

Get some tortilla chips or veggies and there you have it.  For any party it’s an easy, fast go to.

Now what tea can go with that? Tropical? Do they have a margarita tea?
