I am mostly a tea drinker but I do drink the occasional cup of coffee. At work they have a handy Keurig and I will grab a quick cup of joe for the additional jolt of caffeine some afternoons. It is very rare that I drink coffee at home. That was until she saved the day, my sweet Coffee Press.
Non Tea Drinkers
We always have coffee grounds on hand at home as not everyone we know are tea drinkers. I know, complete and utter madness. Why do I even let these people in my house? My coffee drinking friends are always in for a real treat though as Old Trusty is pulled out of a kitchen cabinet where he is proudly stored.
Old Trusty
Old Trusty is our electric coffee percolator that was a wedding present. It has been with us since my husband and I got married 19 years ago. Old Trusty’s stainless steel had never faded. There was a clear ball on the top where For 19 years you could see the coffee percolating. Old Trusty purred away happily brewing coffee and filling our Kitchen with the most amazing smells. He could easily fill 8 cup or more to the brim of delicious coffee. I’m not sure of the brand anymore but it looked similar to the Farberware stainless steel classic percolator.
Coffee drinking guests
We had company staying over and Old Trusty was proudly put out on the counter. My husband added coffee grounds, water and we had creamer at the ready. Old Trusty was plugged in and ready to go. He purred away and as usual made the most perfect cups of coffee.
The next day the same old happy routine.
Day 3
By day 3 we offered our guests another treat. We added the water, the coffee grounds, had the creamer ready and plugged him in as usual and nothing. No purring sound, no yummy smells. We tried another plug and another, still nothing. We realized it was the end. Our 19 years were finally over. Old Trusty had moved on to better coffee grounds.
What to do?
In our grief we did not know what to do? No coffee? Unhappy guests? Then I remembered something. I reached back into THAT cabinet, our kitchen cabinet of despair. I’m not even sure what’s in there. I reached past the toaster, Crockpot, salad spinner, George Foreman grill and there suddenly finally I found her, hidden in the back. My sweet little, non electrical, Starbucks Coffee Press who had been cast aside. I quickly pulled her out and washed her thoroughly.
Coffee Press
I have not used the Coffee Press in years. It is very similar to a teapot so being very thorough I guessed the amount of coffee grounds needed. I decided on 3 1/2 tablespoons. I added new water to the kettle, as I would with tea and turned the kettle on. I filled the coffee press the with hot water and waited. I decided 4 minutes seemed like a good amount of time to brew as 4-5 is my usual brewing time for tea. Can’t be too much different than tea right? Finally I pushed down on the top and then poured the coffee.
Success
The Coffee Press was a hit! Now that may be because I use creamer in coffee instead of fat free milk so it makes it extra yummy and I do not stir my coffee to watch the clouds the creamer forms. I was very excited by the end result.
Ok so maybe she can only pull off 2-3 cups at a time and she doesn’t have any purring noises but she was still a welcome treat. My sweet coffee press takes up less real estate so she now has a permanent home our counter. Welcome back coffee press.
Do you ever use a coffee press? Do you watch the clouds in your coffee or stir the creamer in?
