How Sweet it is: The Cherry Bakewells Dessert/Tea Taste Test

I was given a “Must Try” tea recommendation by a tea drinking friend. A friend gave her some to her and she is completely hooked. You know how I love a tea recommendation so I just had to try Twinings Cherry Bakewell.

The package contained 20 envelopes of tea that is described as a green tea with an almondy cherry taste softened with a smooth vanilla flavor. I thought my hot tea drinking daughter would love to try this tea as she loves sweet treats and this tea is inspired by the Cherry Bakewell dessert.

Before we tried the tea I started wondering: how we would know if the tea and dessert even had a similar flavor? I decided I should do a tea/dessert taste test. I found some Cherry Bakewells desserts on Amazon and placed my order. As the order was coming from the UK it was going to take a little longer to get here. I could not wait!

The 6 Cherry Bakewells made by Mr Kipling company arrived promptly. According to the packaging their Cherry Bakewells are pastry cases with a layer of plum and raspberry jam, almond flavored sponge, topped with fondant icing and a half glacé cherry on top. My daughter started eyeing them and was curious what time we would be having tea.

Let the taste test begin.

As I have a kettle with actual tea settings now I set my Mirocco EK1 kettle to the green tea setting of 175°F and followed the brewing instructions.

Cherry Bakewell Brewing instructions

  • Twinings recommends using freshly boiled water
  • Allow 1 bag per person
  • Brew for a maximum of 2 minutes-any longer you would lose the delicate taste.
  • The tea is always best enjoyed without milk

I usually prefer a pot of tea but did not deviate from their instructions and went with 1 bag per cup.

Cherry Bakewell flavors

Now I know Cherry Bakewells must taste a little differently from each company that produces them or person that makes them so I decided that similar flavor would be close enough for me for this taste test.

Our thoughts

With my topnotch reviewers in place, my husband, hot tea drinking daughter and myself, each had a tea which was accompanied by a Mr Kiplings Cherry Bakewell dessert. Yum and Yum is all I can say. From the smell of the tea when I opened the box to the taste of it the tea really did make you feel like you were having a cherry based dessert. Then we tried Mr. Kipplings cherry bakewell. Oh my gosh-delicious and crumbly. Our thoughts on the tea/dessert comparison: we all would say that the tea is very similar in taste. In fact, I instantly made a second cup.

Mr Kipling Cherry Bakewells are very tasty and I will definitely order again as a special treat. I will absolutely add Twinings Cherry Bakewell tea into my rotation for that sweet craving. Another plus with Twinings Cherry Bakewell tea is the fact that I can have more than 1 as it is a little better with the calories.
