A beautiful yet somewhat chilly day took me out to the little town of Lavernia, Texas in search of tulips. I had heard about a tulip farm out there and could not wait to go. So off I went in search of some beautiful flowers and perhaps tea.
Where?
Lavernia is a little town about 25 miles from downtown San Antonio that I had never been to so this made for a fun road trip. We put the farm location info into the gps and with visions of my trip to Amsterdam in my head we set off to Texas Tulips.
Where’s the tea?
Before we headed off on our outing I did what I always do before going somewhere new- I checked into whether there are any tea shops where we are going. It’s usually a coffee shop that sells tea and that is how I came across Pop’s Coffee and Ice Cream Shoppe.
Texas Tulips
It was a beautiful day in Lavernia and there were quite a few people at the Tulip farm but it was not over crowded. After paying the first thing you see is a sign that easily explains the in and outs of the tulip picking process.
Texas Tulips how to’s
- Take a basket
- Choose a tulip from the field
- When picking the tulip pull from the bottom of the stem.
- Pull up and the bulb should stay in the ground
- Bring your tulips to the wrapping station
- A beautiful bouquet will be made for you.
I felt like Little Red Riding hood with my cute basket to put my flowers in. For a fun day outing I was all set. I headed off in search of my tulip favs. We walked up and down the rows and chose 6 favorites in a variety of colors.
Popularity
The Tulip farm was pretty popular that day. There were families, couples, as well people celebrating special events. There was someone having birthday pictures taken with large balloons of the big 4.0. There were also a group of ladies celebrating a bridal shower with the future bride wearing a veil and everyone in the group leaving with a bouquet. A good time was had by all.
Flower buying
Some people were buying 1 flower-others buying dozens. My husband and I had a blast. We took the obligatory pics by the Texas tulip sign and I headed off with my bouquet. I would go again next year.
Time for Tea
From Texas Tulips we headed off in search of tea to Pop’s Ice Cream and Coffee Shoppe about 7 miles away. According to an online review they have a great dirty chai. This little coffee shop was adorable. Friendly staff, WiFi, and even activities for children to do (coloring books etc). Food wise there were kolaches, muffins and even though it was a chilly day ice cream was a must. We went ahead with the dirty chai per the online recommendation.
Dirty Chai?
A dirty chai is usually a shot of espresso mixed with chai concentrate or just the spiced chai all put together with steamed milk. A true combo of coffee and tea in a latte. Dirty chai used to be more of an off menu item- a coffee shop secret- but now more easily obtainable. So if you are interested in a tea with extra kick this might be the drink for you.
Well the yummy combo of my warm dirty chai and sweet ice cream hit the spot. If I’m ever back Lavernia way between now and next tulip season I will stop by, if not-see you in a year Pop’s Coffee and Ice Cream.

The farm is open daily 10-6 from the end of January through mid March $5 entry fee per person and S2.50 per tulip. It is located at 15122 FM 775 Lavernia, Texas.
