Rooibos tea in a measuring spoon with ginger and dried hibiscus in a silver bowl

How to blend your own tea with Solstice Tea Traders

Over the past few months many people have taken to learning a new hobby, a new language, knitting, or  taken up a new form of exercise. We have all done this at various other times in our lives but right now it seemed a little more like we were well…quarantined. So with my packed schedule, shift to working remotely, and the state of the world, I thought what better time to try my hand at something new. I decided to blend my own tea.

Solstice Tea Traders

I wasn’t really sure where to begin so off I searched and found a kit sold by Solstice Tea Company. They sell a kit with a variety of loose teas, dried flowers and herbs that allow you-like a crazed magician-to make your own DIY tea. I eagerly waited.

Packaging

The packaging was cute.

When I opened the box there were 12 tins.

  • 2 tins of China black tea
  • 2 tins of sencha green tea
  • 2 tins of rooibos herbal tea
  • 1 tin dried lemon grass
  • 1 tin dried ginger root
  • 1 tin of rose petals
  • 1 tin dried lavender
  • 1 tin of dried hibiscus flowers
  • 1 empty tin for shaking up your mixtures

Where to begin-helpful hints

If you are really stumped or intimidated as to where to begin with making tea blends they include 3 easy starter suggestions. I decided that should be my plan. My choices were:

Lovely Rose Black Tea

Red Red Wine

Lean Green.

Red Red Wine

Well I was a big fan of UB40-ok some of you must remember them-and their song Red Red Wine-ahhh now it rings a bell-well maybe? Anyway I thought the Red Red Wine suggestion was a good place to start. Baby steps.

Their Red Red Wine tea had 3 ingredients and water-OK I think I can pull that off.

  • 1 tbsp Rooibos
  • 1/2 tbsp ginger and
  • 1/2 tbsp hibiscus
  • 12-16 oz water.

Well I like all of those ingredients so let’s see how that goes.

How to mix a brew

Each ingredient alone had a fabulous scent and I could not wait to try them combined. I put the required amount in the empty tin and shook it around to mix them.up. I then added them to my Teabloom glass teapot to see the color of the final product. I poured fresh boiled water from my kettle and measured 16 oz in a measuring cup to make sure I had the right amount. The packaging did not specify how long to brew each tea for so I went with my standard 4 minutes.

Review of Red Red Wine Tea

Well I gathered together my crew of top notch tea tasters, my husband, hot tea drinking daughter and myself.  We all loved the dark red color of the tea and it had an amazing flavor and smell-a definite good first choice for me.

My Tea Making Experience

It was so much fun! I loved the measuring and mixing-I think my new title will be Denise the Mixologist. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience and the amount of product provided must last for ages. According to their information each tin is ½ cup volume giving .75-1.5 oz of tea or flavoring. Depending on Leaf density there can be up to 40 cups of tea and 5 different flavorings. Sounds good to me.

If you are a beginner and are curious how to mix your own tea I would definitely think this is a good place to start. I also think it would be a great gift. Now I may still try their other suggestions but I can not wait to try my own mixtures-wish me luck!

Do I plan on having others try my concoctions?  Oh definitely- be prepared my local tea drinking friends.

Have you ever made your own tea?
